Repeat Sentence: hear the phrase, then say it clearly

Repeat Sentence combines listening and speaking. You hear a sentence and repeat it aloud. Focus on its meaning and phrase groups so you can reproduce the wording clearly without losing the end of the sentence.

What is Repeat Sentence?

The prompt is spoken once in the practice task. Your job is to retain and repeat the sentence as accurately as you can. MaxPTE provides audio prompts and recording in its Academic practice player; review each attempt to see where words were lost or changed.

How to practise this task

  1. Listen for the sentence’s subject, action and final phrase.
  2. Hold two or three natural chunks in memory instead of isolated words.
  3. Begin speaking promptly and keep a steady pace.
  4. Compare your recording with the original and note one recurring error.

Practical preparation guidance

  • Shadow short spoken phrases to build sound-to-speech coordination.
  • Pay attention to small words, endings and the final clause.
  • Use a variety of sentence lengths rather than drilling only easy prompts.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Waiting so long that the first phrase fades from memory.
  • Replacing unfamiliar words with invented words.
  • Speaking too fast and dropping articles or endings.

Illustrative practice sentence

“The library will remain open during the examination period.” Listen for the subject (“the library”), action (“will remain open”) and time phrase (“during the examination period”), then repeat the full sentence.

Quick answers

Should I write the sentence down?

Use listening and verbal recall for this spoken task; lengthy note-taking can interrupt the response.

What should I review after an attempt?
