Respond to a Situation: make your response useful

What is Respond to a Situation?

The task presents a situation and asks for a spoken reply. A good practice response addresses the actual request, uses a suitable tone and gives the listener a clear next step. MaxPTE lets you practise the Academic task with the same task route used by its learner catalog.

How to practise this task

  1. Identify your role, the listener and the action required.
  2. Open with the main message instead of a long introduction.
  3. Add one relevant reason or detail, then a specific next step.
  4. Speak naturally and check that your response fits the relationship in the prompt.

Practical preparation guidance

  • Rephrase the task in one sentence before recording so you stay on topic.
  • Practise both formal and everyday scenarios; adjust tone to the listener.
  • Listen to your recording for clarity and completeness, not only fluency.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Describing the situation instead of responding to the person.
  • Making an unrealistic promise or ignoring a key constraint.
  • Using an overly casual tone for a formal request.

Example response plan

If you need to ask a lecturer for a deadline extension, state the request, briefly explain the reason and propose a realistic submission date. The plan is illustrative and is not a real exam question.

Quick answers

Do I need a memorised script?

A flexible structure helps, but adapt the content to the situation in front of you.

Should the response be formal?

Use the level of formality that fits the listener and scenario.
