What is Summarize Group Discussion?

This PTE Academic speaking task begins with a recorded discussion. Your response should explain its central topic, the major views and the relationship between them. MaxPTE offers this task in the Academic practice catalog, where you can attempt questions and review your response.

How to practise this task

  1. During the audio, note the topic and one key point from each speaker.
  2. Mark agreement, contrast or a proposed solution rather than transcribing every sentence.
  3. Use a short opening to identify the topic, then connect the main views.
  4. Finish with the overall outcome only if the discussion actually reaches one.

Practical preparation guidance

  • Use brief notes with speaker labels or arrows; complete sentences take too long.
  • Group repeated ideas together so the summary does not sound like a turn-by-turn transcript.
  • Practise speaking from notes once, then compare your summary with the source discussion.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Reporting one speaker while ignoring the others.
  • Inventing a conclusion when the speakers did not agree.
  • Listing disconnected details instead of explaining how the ideas relate.

Example summary structure

If a discussion compares online and in-person classes, say what the group is comparing, mention the access benefit raised by one speaker and the interaction concern raised by another, then state any shared recommendation. This is a structure example, not a real test prompt.

Quick answers

Should I repeat each speaker word for word?

No. Capture the main ideas and their relationships in your own language.

What if speakers disagree?

Describe the disagreement accurately; do not force a false consensus.
