Write From Dictation: capture the whole sentence

Write From Dictation asks you to type a sentence after hearing it. The challenge is to retain the full wording while keeping spelling, word order and grammar intact. A reliable method combines listening in phrases with a deliberate final check.

What is Write From Dictation?

You hear a spoken sentence and type what you heard. The MaxPTE Academic practice player provides listening prompts and an answer field, allowing you to compare your response with the target sentence after an attempt.

How to practise this task

  1. Listen for the main clause and remember phrase boundaries.
  2. Type the words you are confident about in their original order.
  3. Use grammar to check missing articles, plurals and verb endings.
  4. Proofread spelling and punctuation before submitting.

Practical preparation guidance

  • Practise with short sentences first, then increase length.
  • Review errors by type: missing words, changed words, spelling or order.
  • Read your typed sentence once for grammatical completeness.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Changing the wording to make a sentence sound more natural.
  • Forgetting small function words or plural endings.
  • Submitting without a spelling check.

Illustrative dictation check

For “The results will be available next week,” check that you typed “will be,” kept “results” plural and ended with “next week.” This is a practice example, not a real exam item.

Quick answers

Can I paraphrase the recording?

No. This task is about reproducing the sentence you hear.

What should I check last?
